In Wrestling with Imperial Christianity, Dr Mukti Barton presents an incisive, radical biblical reading of recent social and political injustices around the world. So many of these atrocities, such as the murder of George Floyd at the hands of police in the USA, have been triggered by the increasingly violent influence of Western imperialism, and are in many cases justified by Western interpretations of the Bible

Through compelling studies of a number of passages of scripture from both Old and New Testaments, Dr Barton offers alternative readings based in the traditions of contextual and liberation theology. She highlights the importance of Jesus’s teaching that one cannot serve both God and wealth, and shows that the mammonic interests of Western imperial Christianity are diametrically opposed to salvation and service of God.

Through the examples of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr, she shows how non-violent forces of resistance to these forces of aggression and subjugation can bring God’s realm of liberation, justice and peace on earth.

Mukti Barton is Indian, Bengali, British, an Honorary Research Fellow at The Queen's Foundation for Ecumenical Theological Education and a Lay Canon of Birmingham Cathedral. Previously, she worked as the Bishop’s Adviser for Black and Asian Ministries in the Diocese of Birmingham and as a lecturer at The Queen's Foundation, teaching Black and Asian Theology and the Bible for liberation, justice and peace. In 2021 she was honoured as a Racial Justice Champion by Churches Together in Britain and Ireland. She is author of Rejection, Resistance and Resurrection: Speaking Out on Racism in the Church (2005).
